Mental Health Care and You

Did you know that 18.5% of our US population experiences mental health issues? That’s 43.8 million people -- one in every five adults in America! Mental health influences the way a person acts, feels, and thinks; while also effecting their social, emotional, and psychological well-being. How individuals make decisions, handle stress, communicate, productively work, and maintain good relationships can all be impacted by their mental health. Individuals in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood can all be affected by mental health challenges.

Mental illnesses can be serious disorders that affect the way you think, cause changes in your mood, and ultimately influence your behavior – whether long lasting or sporadic. More than half of America’s population will be diagnosed with a mental health disorder at some point in their life. Many can {and will!} recover completely, specifically through increasing self-care habits and seeking support and guidance.

How do I improve my Mental Health?

  • Connect with people such as family, friends, or social groups

  • Meditate

  • Seek professional help, when needed

  • Get enough sleep

  • Engage in physical activity – whether taking part in a Zumba class, doing some yard work, or going for a swim

  • Stay positive in every situation

  • Eat a healthy diet, which may include leafy greens, fruit, nuts, or beans

Benefits of focusing on your mental health can include:

  • Managed stress levels

  • Maintaining and fulfilling healthy relationships

  • Understanding your full potential

  • Improved self confidence

  • Heightened self esteem

  • A sense of contentment

  • A sense of purpose and meaning in life
